Strengthening National Policies to Stop Sexual Violence against Children: A Council of Europe Project in Cyprus
A partnership between the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly and the A. G. Leventis Foundation, this project aims to put Cyprus in a position to implement the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse within the next three years. The existing methodologies, modalities and structures for data collection on child sexual abuse will be reviewed through specifically designed research. Based on such reliable data, policy recommendations for legislative or institutional reforms will be provided with a view to setting up comprehensive and integrated mechanisms, coordinating data collection from all relevant participants at national and local levels. The good practices identified in this pilot project, launched on 14 October 2013, will be shared among parliamentarians, academia, national, regional and local authorities and professionals. Targeted awareness-raising will also be undertaken, in line with the aims of the Council of Europe ‘ONE in FIVE’ campaign to stop sexual violence against children, with emphasis on the parliamentary dimension.
