Greek Chair, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, established in 1969, has housed a Greek Chair since 1998. Today, courses in Greek Studies, offered as optional courses at BA, MA and M.Phil. levels, are generating great interest, with the number of students increasing steadily and counting approximately 100 this year. The courses include Modern Greek Language, Ancient Greek Civilisation, History and a Comparative Civilisation course focusing on India and Greece. The University’s Greek Chair is the only optional programme in the school where not only the language but various aspects of Greek culture and comparative Indian and Greek civilisation are also taught. An annual journal entitled Yavanika (dossier for the ‘Yavanas’: the Greeks), devoted to research in Greco-Indian studies and the exchange of ideas, is produced by the Greek Chair, which also publishes academic works and organises lectures, workshops and seminars. The existence of a Greek Chair in one of the most prestigious universities of India greatly enhances the cultural relations between Greece and India and contributes to the fullest to the understanding of the two peoples.
