Department of Classics, University of Ibadan, Nigeria

The Department of Classics was established at the University of Ibadan, then a College of the University of London, as one of the foundation academic departments. It is one of the foremost centres of scholarship in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a range of research themes from classical antiquity to its relationship with modern and contemporary cultural and intercultural contexts. For more than 20 years, Constantine Leventis, first Chairman of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, supported the Department of Classics at Ibadan and the Classical Association of Nigeria in the pursuit of academic excellence. The Foundation has greatly encouraged the Department in innovative research, capacity building and skills acquisition training through its donation of books, as well as provision for the development support of the academic staff. Since 2006, when the Biennial Constantine Leventis Memorial Lecture was instituted at Ibadan to expand the horizons of classical culture, the Foundation has funded the hosting of five lectures delivered by eminent classicists from the US, Africa, Europe and Australasia.
