Centre of African Studies, University of Cambridge
The Centre of African Studies, University of Cambridge, is an interdisciplinary centre established in 1965, running a programme of research, conferences, seminars, a master’s degree in African Studies and a scheme for visiting fellows coming from African universities. The A. G. Leventis Foundation has been a major supporter of the Centre and particularly of its visiting fellowship programme, which has focused on supporting early-career African academics with their research. This year the Centre appointed Dr Egodi Uchendu of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to an A. G. Leventis Fellowship; Dr Uchendu will be working on the theme of Islam in Nigeria’s Eastern Niger region. The Foundation also supports the Annual Lecture in African Studies at the Centre. This year’s speaker was Prof. Sylvia Tamale from the Faculty of Law, Makerere University, Uganda, who delivered a lecture on ‘Exploring the Contours of African Sexualities: Statutory, Customary and Religious Laws’.
