A. G. Leventis Professor of Byzantine Art History, Courtauld Institute of Art, London

With the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, Byzantine Studies continue to thrive at the Courtauld Institute, both in teaching and research. The A. G. Leventis Professor Dr Antony Eastmond divides his research between topics in Late Antique and Byzantine Art, topics relating to the Caucasus and relations between the Christian and Islamic cultures there.

His most recent book is a study of women and identity in eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus on the eve of the Mongol invasions in the thirteenth century – the land where three worlds meet. Last year’s MA group were awarded three Distinctions and one Merit, with two students subsequently accepted into PhD programmes, while two PhD candidates completed their theses, entitled ‘Social Histories of the Last Judgement in Byzantine Art’ and ‘Towards an Anatomical Art History: Medieval Objects in the Shared Space between Art and Medicine’. With the support of the Foundation, a major international conference on the Byzantine mosaics of Thessaloniki was jointly organised by Dr Eastmond and Dr Myrto Hatzaki, which brought together ten scholars from Greece, Switzerland, Norway, the UK and the USA to spark lively debate about the dating and function of the mosaics before a large audience at the Courtauld.
