UNICEF Polio Eradication Programme in Gombe State, Nigeria

Joining forces with UNICEF to fight poliomyelitis, the infectious disease caused by the poliovirus, the A. G. Leventis Foundation supported the UNICEF initiative for polio eradication in Gombe State, Nigeria. In 2014, Nigeria reported 122 cases of wild poliovirus, representing more than half of cases reported globally. Through this project, UNICEF seeks to increase immunisation coverage in Gombe State to 87%. The support from the Foundation has enabled UNICEF to ensure health workers are adequately trained; vaccines and equipment for regular immunisation are in sufficient supply; and that even the most vulnerable children are reached. With the recent spread of polio in the Middle East, including the first cases in Syria and Iraq in 14 years, immunisation against polio is now more vital than ever. With the assistance of the Foundation, UNICEF has made strides to ensure children are protected against this deadly disease.
