Melathron Evgerias – Home for the Elderly, Cyprus
The Melathron Evgerias in Nicosia is a home for the elderly and was one of the first projects completed by the Republic of Cyprus. It was founded in 1960 at the initiative of Makarios III, the Archbishop of Cyprus, Chrysostomos, the Αbbot of the Holy Monastery of the Virgin of Kykkos, and Anastasios G. Leventis, who assumed the costs of its construction. It was completed with contributions from the Beneficent Brotherhood of Nicosia and philanthropic citizens. The home was designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Polyvios Michaelides, one of the leading representatives of Modernism in Cyprus. In 2012, the A. G. Leventis Foundation undertook the extensive renovation of the Melathron’s A. G. Leventis wing, which included refurbishment of the residents’ rooms, provision of new furnishings and creation of pleasant communal spaces and additional entrance and reception spaces, along with a designated medical space and a space for exercise. The A. G. Leventis wing has been linked to the main reception and facilities wing, which has also been revamped. The new, enhanced spaces have improved the residents’ quality of life, while the extensive work in the garden allows residents to spend longer hours of recreation outdoors. The landscaping of the outdoor spaces included replanting, creation of new pathways and provision of garden furniture in shaded areas, while private balconies have also been equipped with furnishings, and interior corridors have been decorated with artwork reproductions.
