Systematic excavation at Mon Repos, Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu
In 2018, after half a century of inaction, excavation at Mon Repos in the Palaeopolis area of Corfu resumed under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu and the direction of Dr Garifalia Metallinou, and with the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation. The excavation of 1822 at Mon Repos, where the sacred grove of the temples of the ancient Korkyra is located, by the British revealed the Doric temple at Kardaki. Works continued in the early 20th century, with the discovery of the Heraion sanctuary by W. Dörpfeld, and were furthered once again in the 1960s by Greek archaeologists G. Dontas and P. Kalligas, who unearthed important remains of the organised sanctuary. The latest excavation focused on the investigation of building B, on the slopes of the Heraion hill, unearthing parts of the outer walls and revealing a watercourse and a kennel alongside pottery finds which support dating the use of the building from the Hellenistic to the Roman times.
