Sustainable management of Lycabettus Hill, Agricultural University of Athens
The Agricultural University of Athens, under the direction of Dr Maria Papafotiou, initiated a study to provide in-depth site analysis and develop strategic measures to enhance the identity of Lycabettus Hill and support the sustainable management of this iconic landmark of the Attica landscape. An indicative zoning of the hill aims to build resilience, establishing a balance between usage and biodiversity, while accounting for the interaction of human and natural elements as well as for the geomorphology of the hill. The site analysis forms a strategic basis for the harmonious integration of architectural interventions and the promotion and protection of the flora. It underscores the historical and cultural significance of water and the particular geological elements of the hill. Based on the analysis conducted by the Agricultural University of Athens, the strategic proposal to revitalise Lycabettus Hill focuses on the creation of three thematic routes, based on existing paths, which will highlight its natural characteristics: the Botanical Route, the Geological Route and the Water Route.
