A. G. Leventis Visiting Research Professorship in Greek, University of Edinburgh
In 1997 the A. G. Leventis Foundation began generously supporting a Chair for a Visiting Research Professorship in Greek in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of classical Greece, its literature, history and people. One of the main responsibilities of the Professor, while in residence, is to arrange a biennial conference resulting in publication. For 2015, A. G. Leventis Professor in Greek Josiah Ober (Stanford University) hosted the 9th A. G. Leventis Conference, this year on an exciting emerging field of study. Ancient Greek History and Contemporary Social Science reflected the turn of social scientists and political theorists towards the potential importance of the classical Greek world and its legacy for testing social theories, and, on the other hand, the mastery among a group of Hellenists of the formal and quantitative methods of contemporary social science which can complement traditional qualitative approaches to Greek history and culture. The excellent papers and highly successful conference will help to define this new field.
