A. G. Leventis Foundation building of the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cyprus

The University of Cyprus is well underway in the process of initiating construction of a new Biological Sciences building, with the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation. The winning architectural team, led by architect Miltiades Katsaros, designed a purpose-built, five-floor structure consisting of two zones, separating the teaching and research areas. Featuring locally sourced materials, the nearly 10,000 m2 building aims to be nearly zero-energy efficient and carbon-neutral, and practise optimal water management by using innovative architectural techniques. In accordance with the sponsorship agreement, studies in the new building will continue to focus on the conservation of biodiversity and the natural environment, the development of renewable energy sources and the integrity of ecosystems when climate change actions are undertaken. In recognition of the Foundation’s support, the building’s entrance square will be named Petra Square, in honour of the hometown of Anastasios G. Leventis. The large hall of the building will likewise be named Constantine Leventis Hall, after the Foundation’s first Chairman.
