A. G. Leventis Classics and Ancient History studentships, University of Exeter

The Department of Classics and Ancient History of the University of Exeter is a major international centre for research on antiquity, consistently ranked within the top five in the UK over the last 35 years. The A. G. Leventis Initiative on the Impact of Greek Culture and the A. G. Leventis postgraduate studentships in Classics at the University of Exeter have enabled world-class research and teaching to take place at the highest level. In the past 25 years, the Department of Classics has been able to offer a total of 9 doctoral studentships, starting in 1997, which provided vital opportunities for young researchers to gain experience of many facets of academic life and establish themselves in their field. From September 2010, the Foundation is also supporting the Leventis Lecturer in the Impact of Greek Culture an initiative designed to bring out, through research, teaching, public lectures and a conference, the influence of Greek culture on other cultures in the ancient world. Past holders of the post are Dr Myrto Hatzimichali, whose research centres on the contact between Greeks and non-Greeks in Ptolemaic Alexandria and Dr Dan King whose position was made permanent by the University, thereby ensuring that the work of the Initiative continues at Exeter. Dan King works on the history of the classical body, with particular focus on the body in ancient science, and its reception beyond antiquity. Since 2018, the Foundation has also funded two other postdoctoral research positions in Hellenic Studies: a three-year post (2018-2021), held by Dr Maria Gerolemou, whose research focuses on ancient technology, especially on automatic theatre and technological animation; and a two-year position (2019-2021), held by Dr Irene Salvo who is currently working on a project entitled: Divine Knowledge: Religion, Gender, Ethnicity, and Access to Power in the Hellenistic and Imperial Greek World.
