A. G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences, The Cyprus Institute, Nicosia
The A. G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences is the latest addition to the long-term grants by the Foundation to support leading research of direct relevance to Cyprus’ remarkable heritage. Established in 2018, it helps build research capacity in Cyprus and develop a highly collaborative network that includes the Department of Antiquities of the University of Cyprus and international missions working in Cyprus. The Foundation’s support leveraged major additional investment by The Cyprus Institute, including a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope and sample preparation facilities dedicated to archaeological research. Among the first projects hosted by the Chair are several studies on Byzantine glass in Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean, and on the early metallurgy of copper. Shortly after his appointment, Professor Thilo Rehren was awarded a major European Horizon 2020 grant that will link the new Chair with more established centres of research at the universities of Cambridge (UK) and Leuven (Belgium), opening further opportunities for collaborative projects for the benefit of Cyprus, and beyond.
