Labyrinth exhibition, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Labyrinth: Knossos, Myth & Reality, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 10 February- 30 July 2023

This major exhibition explores one of the most infamous of classical myths and celebrated stories of modern archaeology: the Labyrinth, the Minotaur and the Palace of Knossos. The exhibition features more than 200 objects, over 100 of which are on loan from Athens and Crete. They are shown, for the first time in more than a century, alongside the Ashmolean’s collections and archives that illustrate the exciting moments when the Palace of Knossos was uncovered between 1900–1905.

Thanks to the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Ashmolean worked alongside archaeologists and museum curators from Greece and elsewhere to create a multi-author exhibition catalogue and host a complementing conference. The conference (28- 30th March) was held at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Cyprus High Commission in London and Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and was an opportunity to bring together some of the contributors to the Fitzwilliam’s Being an Islander and the Ashmolean’s Labyrinth exhibitions.
