Islanders: The Making of the Mediterranean, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 24 February to 4 June 2023

The exhibition is the result of the interdisciplinary research project “Being an Islander: Art and Identity of the Large Mediterranean Islands” (2019-23), which, together with a corresponding public engagement programme, investigates island identities in the Mediterranean. Bringing together two hundred objects from the islands of Crete, Cyprus and Sardinia, the exhibition and research project explore how “insularity”, being of an island, affected and shaped art production and creativity, architectural evolution, migrations and movement of people. The exhibition extends beyond the topic of the Ancient Mediterranean raising questions of identity and difference between islands and mainland that are still relevant today.

The exhibition and research project have been supported by the A. G. Leventis Foundation with a 5-year grant (2019-2021 and 2023-2024).
