Digital imaging survey of the work of Theodoros Apsevdis in Cyprus, STARC, The Cyprus Institute
Byzantine painter Theodoros Apsevdis is associated with a number of murals and icons in Cyprus, most notably at the hermitage of St Neophytos and the Church of the Virgin of Arakas. Building on the advanced technological infrastructure of DIOPTRA: The Edmée Leventis Digital Library of Cypriot Culture and the Imaging Cluster for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (ICACH) of The Cyprus Institute, this collaborative project brings together The Cyprus Institute, the Department of Antiquities, the Church of Cyprus, the Centre for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France, the University of Illinois and the University of Southern California, and offers an interdisciplinary approach to Apsevdis’s work at the end of the 12th century. This important digital survey underlines the ways in which technology can enhance art historical research, offering additional insights to the evidence of historical sources and stylistic analysis. Through this project, imaging technologies and the use of analytical applications offer a quantitative level of inquiry thus revising our understanding of this important artist with broader implications for Cypriot history and the art of the Byzantine painter.
