Cyprus in Context project and ‘Being an Islander’ exhibition, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
A major research project undertaken by the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cyprus in Context re-assessed and re-contextualised 1,100 objects from ancient Cyprus, the majority of which belong to the A. G. Leventis Gallery of Ancient Cyprus of the Fitzwilliam Museum, but also to the Museum of Classical Archaeology and the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge. The objects include some of the finest examples of ceramics, glass, bronzes and marble sculpture from prominent sites such as Salamis, Palaepaphos, Marion, Tamassos and Vounous. The project, which followed recent theoretical advances in the fields of Cypriot and Mediterranean Archaeology and incorporated results from important new archaeological discoveries in Cyprus, analysed over 150 objects under the framework of new technologies, such as X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, microscopy and other analytical techniques. It enabled the creation of a scientific network of archaeologists, historians specialising in antiquity, museum curators and analytical scientists from the UK, Cyprus, Greece, Sweden and the USA, which will realise the large-scale exhibition and research project Being an Islander at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 2023.
