The Cyprus Collection, Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm

With its commitment to support Cypriot archaeology, the A. G. Leventis Foundation has long collaborated with the Medelhavsmuseet (Museum of Mediterranean and Near Easter Antiquities) in Stockholm, a museum which hosts one of the largest collections of (scientifically excavated) Cypriot antiquities worldwide and thus constitutes a point of reference for the archaeology of the island. With the Foundation’s support, the Medelhavsmuseet inaugurated the Expedition Gallery (dedicated to the work of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition) in 2006, followed by a new, architecturally innovative Gallery of Cypriot Antiquities in the Museum’s central hall, which opened in 2009. From 2011 to 2018 the Foundation funded a postdoctoral research position at the Medelhavsmuseet: the A. G. Leventis Postdoctoral Fellow to work on the sanctuary of Ayia Irini on Cyprus project, with a special focus on the unpublished pottery from the site. Thanks to the Foundation’s support, the documentation, conservation and study of the unpublished finds from Ayia Irini was made possible, while the Foundation also supported research-related travel for its Medelhavsmuseet Postdoctoral Fellow.
