Workshop on the protection of traditional settlements, Elliniki Etairia – Society for the Environment and Culture, Kastoria

The Council for the Architectural Heritage of Elliniki Etairia – Society for the Environment and Culture, in cooperation with the Municipality of Kastoria, successfully organized a workshop on the Institutional Framework and Protection of Traditional Settlements in Kastoria, on 16 May 2015, with the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation. The workshop successfully raised issues regarding the existing institutional framework, while the financial tools currently available which can be used in the protection and promotion of traditional settlements in Greece were also discussed in depth. Through the proceedings, it became evident that, under certain conditions, the protection of such settlements is not only feasible but also economically beneficial for local communities. The endangered architectural heritage of Kastoria, the value of which has been recognised on a European level with the inclusion of the Dolcho and Apozari neighbourhoods in the 7 Most Endangered programme of Europa Nostra, was also highlighted. On behalf of the Europa Nostra Scientific Council, architect Dr Pedro Ponce de Léon presented the feasibility study for the protection of these two traditional neighbourhoods.
