Agios Vasileios Archaeological Project, Global Heritage Fund, Sparta

The site of Agios Vasileios, with its Bronze Age palace and stunning archaeological finds, is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean. Powered by the Global Heritage Fund, and supported by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Agios Vasileios archaeological project sheds new light on this fascinating, and largely unexplored, site. The project investigates the extent, character and chronology of the physical remains, the organisation of the Eurotas valley and the Lakonia region during the Late Bronze Age and its contacts with other Mycenaean centres in the mainland and the Aegean, also prompting re-evaluation of Homeric texts, which mention the palace of Menelaus, in light of the new archaeological evidence.
